Outer quote mark 1964 Barbaresco—Dinner at a local restaurant provided an opportunity to try this beautiful wine from a perfectly stored bottle. The color is very light, pale red. This 1964 shows a very pretty and delicate nose of crushed flowers, anise, and spices, followed by gorgeous sensations of sweet, perfumed, ethereal fruit that blossom on the palate, finishing with much overall harmony and balance. Outer quote mark It had been many, many years since I had last tasted the beautiful 1964 Gaja Barbaresco, which predates the release of single vineyard bottlings from this iconic estate, which did not commence until the 1967 vintage. The 1964 Barbaresco was consequently a blend of all the best crus owned by the Gaja family at this time and the wine offers up a deep, complex and à point bouquet of cherries, fennel seed, fresh oregano, road tar, orange peel and a superb base of autumnal soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a lovely soil signature, a nice spine of tariness, moderate tannins and fine length and grip on the very classy and vibrant finish. This wine has no doubt been into its plateau of peak drinkability for many years already, but it remains at its apogee and shows no signs of slowing down for many decades to come. A superb wine. Outer quote mark This was quite stunning – what a treat for all 200 of us to enjoy a 45-year-old wine in such brilliant condition. So harmonious and velvety, yet still with great freshness. Sweet, mild – a great testament to a winemaking dynasty. 18.5/20 Inner quote mark (5/2009)
