Outer quote mark One of the first 1961 clarets that I tasted and a sublime experience it was too. A beautiful, subtle nose of cedar and leather. Not complex but well-defined and unreservedly "classic". The palate still has firm tannins backed with ample sweet red fruit entwined with an earthy/cigar-box flavour. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2000)

Outer quote mark The bottle of ’61 Beychevelle that we had at our New York vertical was slightly advanced, which was too bad, as I had never tasted this vintage of Beychevelle previously and its inherent quality was very readily apparent in our forward bottle. The nose is deep, pure and wonderfully complex, as it wafts from the glass in a mélange of black cherries, sweet berries, a bit of violet, a beautiful base of soil, a touch of dark chocolate and a topnote of cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure and quite velvety on the attack, with a good core, great complexity and focus and just a bit of suave, melting tannins still to be found on the hauntingly long finish. I have no doubt that perfectly pristine bottles of the ‘61 Beychevelle would be even superior to this bottle, as there is not quite the intensity and backend grip here as I would suspect from this wine, given how beautifully both the ’62 and ’59 were showing at our vertical tasting, and it is inconceivable that an estate like Beychevelle at the top of its game at this time, would not have pulled off a brilliant wine in 1961. So keep in mind that my note on this very good bottle is probably only the tip of the iceberg for this particular vintage of Beychevelle. 92+ Inner quote mark (5/2011)
Outer quote mark Depth of flavor makes this firmly textured wine special. It has enticing earthy, tobaccolike aromas, ripe fruit flavors, just enough tannin and a lingering finish. Still cruising … Inner quote mark (4/1996)
