This was an unfeasibly young Ben Leroux’s third vintage as régisseur at Comte Armand, although he had already worked there as an apprentice. There’s a hint of the farmyard about this wine, but it also has finesse and fragrance with some ferrous, dried blood notes of a classic Pommard and leafy, tertiary forest floor flavours.   (opened from personal storage). Wonderfully complex aromas of ripe, cool and now mostly secondary red and black fruit, crushed herbs and pungent warm earth aromas merge into medium-bodied, powerful, concentrated and vibrant flavors that have slowly mellowed to become relatively supple. The supporting structure has largely if not completely been resolved which imparts a velvety character to the precise and admirably persistent finish. This is an extremely impressive effort that has reached that inflection point of maturity where it could certainly be enjoyed now or held for a few more years first. Tasted a number of times over the years and this is indeed a terrific 2001 Pommard. Multple and consistent notes.   (5/2019)

The 2001 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is the first to really up the ante compared to older vintages. It has a fragrant nose that is far fresher than those from the previous decade, with more “Pinote” evident: black truffle-tinged strawberry and red currant that musters subtle wilted rose petal aromas with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite powerful notes of fresh strawberry and tart red cherries that segue into a surprisingly dense finish that is long and refined. Drink now-2018. (NM)   (8/2013)

Slightly hazy medium red. Reticent but still-fresh aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, truffle and leather; lovely fruit retention here. Concentrated and energetic, offering considerable sex appeal to its flavors of red fruits, leather, smoked meat, truffle and earth. The suave finish features fine-grained tannins nicely supported by mid-palate fruit and excellent length. (ST)   (4/2017)

Well-integrated, evolved nose with a hint of liquorice. Light charge of tannins in good balance with the bright fruit. Very lively indeed. Real life and still lots of potential. Great stuff! Good balance. 18/20 points. (JR)   (1/2018)
