1972 Romanee Conti - Pinot Noir

1972 Romanee Conti

DRC Grand Echezeaux
DRC bottle # 10103....... We recently acquired nine DRC bottles, from an ex-Oregon winery owner, all were purchased when he caught the Pinot bug, back in the 1980's. All the wines were kept in his cellar before being moved to his San Diego home in 2011.

Tasting note: Significant bricking but still a deep ruby center. A softly aromatic nose of spice, earth, game and the noticeable sous-bois precedes edgy tannic and nicely complex medium-bodied flavors of solid vibrancy and good power before ending in a moderately long finish. Unfortunately, the acidity is sufficiently aggressive that it causes the tannins to seem more prominent than they are and it's unlikely that time will cause this to soften much further, particularly given that this is already 45 years old! Note that I have tasted this many times and have experienced moderate bottle variation with the better examples being in the 88 to 90 range but, somewhat oddly, others have displayed a distinct lactic character  Burghound 89
