(alcohol in the mid 15s; from what Philippe Melka describes as "a fairly flat, low-pH vineyard on gravelly soil," producing a rich style of wine from thick-skinned grapes and small clusters): Saturated ruby. Rather wild aromas of cassis, black raspberry, flint and game. Then surprisingly suave and sweet in the mouth for the vintage, with good stuffing to the black fruit and violet flavors. Finishes with broad, building, fine-grained tannins and very good length. Philippe Melka calls this "a powerful, rustic Old World style of wine," but this 2011 struck me as rather refined. Owner Lawrence Fairchild owns a small parcel above Lake Hennessy and will produce his first Pritchard Hill wine from the 2013 vintage. He also has contracts with several other high-quality sites, so this is clearly a label to follow. -- Stephen Tanzer 91
